BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AND ANIMALS
Lesson 1
Learning from Animals
Learning from Animals
Students explore how animal research has contributed to human health and why it is important to biomedical research. Students read about the sulfanilamide disaster that led to regulations and oversight of drug manufacturing by the U.S. government and explore how working with animals could have prevented this disaster from occurring.
Lesson Questions
- What are the benefits of studying and understanding other species?
- How has animal research improved our understanding of disease?
Collaborating in Science
These lessons were developed in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research (PSBR). For additional information about animal research and PSBR programming, visit www.psbr.org.
