Families Fighting Flu Campaign Features Hilleman Film Clip
Influenza vaccination is the most effective way to protect family members from influenza, a deadly disease that circulates throughout the U.S. every year. Members of Families Fighting Flu, a nonprofit advocacy organization dedicated to flu prevention, know first-hand just how life-altering influenza can be because they have lost, or almost lost, loved ones to a disease that is often mistakenly considered to be a minor illness.
Because the organization’s members have all been immensely impacted by influenza, Families Fighting Flu realizes the importance of reminding families to get vaccinated and sharing the history of this often devastating illness. “People often get caught up in the myths and misinformation they find online and fail to look at the devastation this disease has caused over the years, particularly during pandemics,” according to Serese Marotta, Chief Operating Officer of Families Fighting Flu. “When I saw HILLEMAN: A Perilous Quest to Save the World’s Children, created by the team at the Vaccine Education Center, I was so excited because it does a great job of reminding viewers what it was like to parent before vaccines were developed. At that time, parents were scared of the diseases. They knew how devastating diseases like influenza could be.”
As part of this year’s awareness efforts, Families Fighting Flu has been using an eight-minute influenza-related segment of HILLEMAN: A Perilous Quest to Save the World’s Children as a central component of their fall campaign. The Hilleman influenza clip tells the story of how Dr. Hilleman successfully predicted pandemic flu in 1957 and prepared a vaccine that likely saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
